Debuted in 2019, Intel's ninth generation processor belongs to the Coffee Lake Refresh series. It is based on a 14nm process and is compatible with desktop motherboards equipped with an LGA 1151 v2 socket. The CPU received four computing single-threaded cores with a clock frequency of 4 GHz each and the possibility of automatic overclocking to 4.6 GHz due to Turbo Boost. Fans of overclocking will be pleased with the unlocked (free) multiplier, which will allow you to safely change the frequency indicators.

The Intel i3-9350KF BOX processor does not have an integrated graphics core, which necessitates the purchase of a discrete graphics card. The model supports up to 64 GB of DDR4 RAM with a maximum frequency of 2400 MHz. The third level cache is 8 MB, which corresponds to the possibilities of entry-class solutions designed for universal use (various programs for work, surfing the net) and for undemanding games.

I compared it with AMD's main competitor - Ryzen 3 1200 FA (updated version 3 1200, released 3 months ago, not yet available in all CIS countries). The results are as follows: overclocked 3 1200 FA shows the same results as this model. But given that it is almost half the price, that motherboards (even with overclocking) for AMD cost a penny, I am unconditionally on the side of Ryzen. Intel is losing its low-cost market, because there are much more affordable solutions from AMD, with not worse performance (and in some areas even better).

The new Core i3-9350KF is actually an improved Core i3-8350K, to which an aggressive Turbo Boost up to 4.6 GHz has been added. And this gave a performance increase of 5 – 10%, thanks to which it became not only the fastest quad-core chip in the LGA1151v2 ecosystem, but also among all quad-core chips on the market. The previous leader Ryzen 5 2500X in terms of power is inferior to the new product by 10 – 20% (depending on the task). This is if we take pure numbers without enabling multithreading.

And the king is naked

Ultimately, however, this title carries no value. The fact is that at the start of sales, the i3-9350KF is actually estimated to be 2 times higher than the younger brother i3-9100F. Although, the performance gap between them is about 20%. But more to come. The announced price of the Core i3-9350KF is only a few dollars less than the six-core Core i5-9400F. And if you focus on prices in real stores, it turns out that for the same money you can also buy some AMD with eight cores. For example, Ryzen 2700 with multi-threading support and auto overclocking up to 4.1 GHz. And this, you know, is already a completely different weight category.

Wait for discounts

Therefore, right now, with such alternatives, the Core i3-9350KF looks, to put it mildly, not the most rational purchase. It will be of interest primarily to overclockers with specific tasks such as overclocking exactly 4 physical cores. And it will only make sense to return to this conversation if Intel reduces the price of a chip by about 25 – 30%.
