A grill is a culinary device designed for cooking in the heat. Despite the fact that all such devices are sometimes combined under the term "air grills", air grills themselves represent only one of the varieties - quite common, but not the only one.
Actually, the classic grill (such models are also called barbecue grills) is a grate or other similar uneven surface, which heats up to a high temperature during cooking. Traditionally, grills used coals to heat up, but now we are talking exclusively about electrical devices. Grills can provide table or floor installation; the first option is useful for kitchens, and the second can be used even outdoors - for example, for picnics in the yard.
A specific variety is the contact grill, which uses two heating surfaces between which the food to be fried is placed. The main advantage of this design is roasting from two sides at once. On the other hand, the thickness of the ingredients must be relatively small, otherwise the device simply will not close (whereas traditional grills do not have such restrictions).
As for air grills, they are, in fact, small table-top ovens in which cooking is carried out by hot air and infrared radiation, and not by direct contact with the heater. This variety is considered the most versatile: conventional grills only work for frying, while an air grill can be used for baking, drying, smoking, with some tricks - cooking and stewing, sterilizing dishes, etc. The volume of the working bowl, however, is limited, which can create inconvenience; however, this situation in many models is corrected by magnifying rings.
Air grills can be equipped with different types of heaters. The most popular are halogen "lamps" that glow during operation: they are efficient and provide fast heating, although they are not very durable. Similar carbon elements "live" longer, but are also expensive. There are also heating elements, but rarely (whereas for other types of grills this is the main option).
Another type of grills are raclettes. They have a very narrow specialization: the main ingredient of raclette is melted cheese, respectively, such devices are intended specifically for melting cheese. When used for their main purpose, raclette grills are very convenient due to a number of design features, but they are actually unsuitable for other purposes. Therefore, some manufacturers produce "two-story" barbecue grills, the top surface of which works like a grill, and the bottom one works like a raclette dish.
