The Japanese corporation Nikon Corporation has historically been engaged in the production of optics, photographic equipment, as well as various equipment for image processing. A significant share of the company's income comes from equipment for the production of semiconductors. But to ordinary users, it is best known as the manufacturer of famous (if not legendary) cameras.

The history of Nikon began in 1917. In those years, the company was called Nippon Kogaku KK and was formed through the merger of three small Japanese manufacturers at once, specializing in the production of various optical instruments. The young company quickly managed to get on its feet thanks to many orders from the military.

1931 was a turning point in the history of the company — the production of lenses for cameras began under the Nikkor brand, which still exists today. It is interesting that for the first time these lenses were also used in photographic equipment by the then young company Canon. Nikon itself in those years was not yet involved in cameras. the first model of the company, called Nikon 1, appeared only in 1946 and was, in fact, a rethinking of the products of the legendary German brand Leika.

With the advent of the camera, the company decides to enter the world market. As a matter of fact, for this purpose a new brand was created, formed from the words that make up the name of the company. Also, the advent of Nikon 1 meant the end of sales of Nikkor lenses for Canon, the companies now became competitors.

Success in the camera market has led to the emergence of many different models. The first Nikon SLR camera was introduced in 1959. It is important to note that the company's products were in demand not only in the consumer market. So, the company's cameras were actively used by NASA, and often these were the most common models that were mass-produced. All this led to the fact that in 1988 Nippon Kogaku changed its name to Nikon.

Today, Nikon is one of the largest manufacturers of photographic equipment in the world, being the main competitor of another well-known Japanese company — Canon. On the Internet, verbal battles are constantly being fought, the participants of which strive to prove the superiority of one of these manufacturers over the other.
