Full-fledged work with Mesh networks
For many, love with ZyXel began with the powerful proprietary KeeneticOS firmware, which is why the Chinese company subsequently made Keenetic a separate subsidiary brand. In the future, they have greatly developed and strengthened these ideas, thanks to which Keenetic routers are well-deserved love among experienced users who are not content with just “turning them on and forgetting them”. For example, the new gigabit model Speedster KN-3010, in addition to the proprietary shell and popular Beamforming and MU-MIMO features, also knows how to work with Mesh networks. But more on that later.
Keenetic OS
Let's start with KeeneticOS. Instead of an old-school web interface or a simple mobile application with a twisted localization, we are greeted with a friendly interface with a modular structure. There are incredibly many opportunities for setting up a network, but no one forces you to dive into them with your head, you can simply remove all unnecessary menu items, leaving only the most important before your eyes. And the interface here is really localized, and not translated from Chinese. All in all, very cool stuff. No wonder it is called not just firmware, but a full-fledged operating system for routers. If you are not a fan of web interfaces, then as an alternative, you can use a mobile application with step-by-step instructions for setting up a network.
Not the best candidate for the role of "just a gigabit router"
The only thing I didn’t like was that even with excellent connection quality, the router does not justify its name Speedster in any way. For almost $80, we get a base rate of 1167 Mbps for the AC1200 class over two channels. On the forums, you can come across an objection in the spirit of "guys, calm down, until recently 100 Mbps was enough for you, and now you whine that gigabit is not enough." Keenetic justifies this by saying that the Speedster KN-3010 can work as part of a Mesh system, that is, when a bunch of routers are combined into one seamless network in which there is no master or slave device. In such a scenario, the perspective changes, as unlike off-the-shelf mesh systems, the KN-3010 offers completely self-sufficient devices with dedicated Ethernet ports, as many people use them to directly connect a computer, TV or home NAS server.
